The Vistar Eye Center Honors a Unique Piece of Roanoke History

Friday, February 01, 2019

Dr. Frank Cotter of the Vistar Eye Center plans to honor a unique piece of Star City history at our 707 Jefferson Street office in Roanoke with a new display in his first-floor office. The display will commemorate a decades-long friendship between the late Roanoke physician Elbyrne Grady Gill and Helen Keller.

Elbyrne Grady Gill (founder of the Gill Memorial Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital) developed a friendship with Keller through his involvement with Lions Club International, inviting her to attend a Virginia Lions Club Convention and, after her attendance, beginning an exchange of letters that lasted for years.

Featuring letter reproductions from the correspondence between Dr. Gill and Helen Keller, as well as archives from the American Federation for the Blind, the Vistar Eye Center is proud to share a piece of Roanoke history with our patients.

You can read more about the planned display and the history it represents in this article, 'Local doc plans office display of Helen Keller's Roanoke connection', written by The Roanoke Times.
