Dr. Vishak J. John is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and specializes in retina services such as vitreoretinal surgery. After completing his undergraduate degree at Wake Forest University in political science, he pursued his Doctorate of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine. After an internship and residency in ophthalmology at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, he completed a fellowship in surgical retina at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida, in 2013.
Intrigued by its blend of medicine and surgery, Dr. Vishak John chose ophthalmology as a way of applying his academic strengths to benefit society.
“It’s challenging, rewarding, and never boring.”
During his residency in Atlanta, he decided to become a vitreoretinal surgeon. The hospital there treated the poorest and the sickest of patients and he realized that he could make the most difference in this field.
“Every week, as I sit in front of the toughest cases, intervene, and restore vision, I feel I couldn’t have chosen a more fulfilling specialty. This is what I was meant to do.”
Dr. John is also interested in the socioeconomic aspects of medicine including affordability, access, and patient compliance. He is married with two children and in his spare time watches documentary films and a lot of European soccer.
