The Role of an Ophthalmic Medical Assistant

As an Ophthalmic Medical Assistant, you’ll be part of our mission to provide comprehensive eye care to preserve, restore and enhance the quality of life of our patients.

You’ll be essential in supporting ophthalmologists in various clinical and administrative tasks. This role is unique in that you’ll act as the initial point of contact for our patients, preparing them for examination and ensuring a smooth and professional flow of patient care. Your combination of technical knowledge, clinical expertise, and compassionate care will help a wide range of patients with various eye needs, from children to adults.

Responsibilities of an Ophthalmic Medical Assistant

When you join us as an Ophthalmic Medical Assistant, you’ll play a crucial role in helping provide life-changing outcomes to patients of all ages.

One of the primary responsibilities of this position is to assist in evaluating and examining our patients. You’ll gather relevant medical history, measure visual acuity, and perform various diagnostic tests such as measuring eye pressure, visual field testing, and corneal topography.

You will also be able to assist with preliminary eye exams, including assessing pupils, eye movements, ocular motility, and administering eye drops. Ophthalmic Medical Assistants may also prepare and assist with minor surgical procedures and remove/apply eye dressings under the direction of the physician provider.

As an Ophthalmic Medical Assistant, you will have the chance to play a critical role in educating our patients about their eye conditions, treatment options, and post-operative care.

As a valued team member, you’ll translate complex medical terms into easily understandable language, empowering patients to actively participate in their eye care journey. By fostering a culture of compassionate communication, you can make a meaningful impact, ensuring our patients are well-informed and supported every step of the way.

Beyond direct patient care, you’ll often handle various administrative tasks in a clinical setting, including scheduling appointments, managing electronic health records, coordinating referrals to other specialists, and maintaining an inventory of medical supplies and medications.

Qualifications of an Ophthalmic Medical Assistant

For this position, we seek individuals who have graduated from high school or possess an equivalent diploma. Attention to detail, the ability to work well with others, and organizational skills are essential attributes we look for as they contribute to the delivery of best-in-class patient care.

As part of our commitment to excellence, our entry-level new hires undergo an extensive 90-day training program that equips them with the necessary skills and knowledge. Throughout the training, you will gain expertise in various areas, including understanding billing and insurance codes, mastering eye terminology and anatomy, navigating electronic medical records (EMR), and ensuring strict compliance with healthcare regulations to safeguard patient privacy.
