Raised in a family of physicians, Dr. John Wood knew medicine was his destiny. When the time came to choose a specialty he consulted with his father who told him, “Son, I’ve never met an unhappy ophthalmologist.” Today he concurs with his dad. “It was a great choice for me because I enjoy the mix of medicine and surgery but most of all the satisfaction that comes with helping patients to see. I believe my role is to educate patients and help them come to a decision regarding treatment. I try to look at the patient holistically and see what’s going to improve the quality of their life. Most of my work deals with cataracts. Surgery is often the answer but sometimes there may be a better course of action.”

Dr. Wood has lived in Roanoke for 36 years. He is a proud grandfather and an avid golfer. He is a golf rules official and volunteers at tournaments throughout southwest Virginia.  He sings in his church choir, loves to read, and is a history buff.
