Facial Fillers are a popular option for non-surgical facial rejuvenation. Facial filler brands such as Restylane®, Juvederm®, and Voluma® are made of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance that already exists in the human body. These fillers are used to restore volume to areas of the face that have lost volume from aging, injury, weight loss, etc. They’re most commonly applied to the lips, creases around the mouth, frown lines, and lower lids.

How do Facial Fillers work?

Facial fillers work by recruiting the body’s own moisture. The filler is injected under the skin surface in strategic patterns and locations through a very small needle. The hyaluronic acid then attracts water molecules, which acts to expand the tissue volume. This ability of hyaluronic acid to bind to water and its naturally slow disintegration is what helps provide lasting results.

What are the side effects?

Facial fillers are generally very safe. Infection or inflammatory nodules are uncommon but should be reported to your physician immediately. Also, look for any signs of problems immediately after injection, such as coldness or pale discoloration of the skin, which could indicate decreased blood flow to the skin.
