Frank Cotter, M.D.

Recently, Dr. Frank Cotter, MD contributed a piece about filtration surgery in the widely-read Ophthalmology Magazine. Filtration surgery is the most common surgery to correct open-angle glaucoma and is said to help the eye drain liquid more effectively. In this piece, Dr. Cotter argues that this procedure is outdated and needs to be re-assessed, as its results have often yielded dangerous outcomes. He cites postoperative management problems, severe short-term complications such as flat chambers and malignant glaucoma and long-term complications like bleb dysesthesia and bleb migration over the cornea to be directly connected with this procedure.
