May is Healthy Vision Month -" Maintaining Healthy Vision in a Digital Age

Tuesday, June 02, 2015

Do you suffer from blurry vision, dry eyes, headaches, and eye strain, and experience difficulty focusing at a distance? Those are all signs that your eyes may be overworked from exposure to digital screens.

What can you do to protect your eyes even when you must be productive?

• Start with the basics. Make sure your glasses or contact lens prescription is up to date. You may be forcing your eyes to work unnecessarily hard to compensate for a weak prescription.

• Some eyewear is designed to help with glare and eye strain, or increase the contrast of a computer screen. Talk with your doctor about upgrading your glasses or contacts to include computer-friendly enhancements. You may also want to use an anti-glare screen with your monitor.

• Finally, incorporate the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, rest your eyes by looking 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Getting up to take a 15- minute break every two hours will also reduce eye strain.

Give your eyes the rest they deserve without sacrificing productivity.
