You look in the mirror and—ouch!—you have red eyes. There are several reasons why eyes become red and many ways to tame irritation, once you know the cause. Let’s explore some of the reasons your eyes may be red and how to deal with it.

Redness from Allergies

Seasonal and other allergies can leave you with itchy, uncomfortable eyes. Over-the-counter drops can help with symptoms, but prescription medications may be needed to control your itching. Whatever you do, try to avoid rubbing your eyes. It can make the swelling worse and could have a lasting effect on your cornea.

Contact Lens Abuse

Do you stretch the rules on wearing contact lenses? If your eyes are showing signs of irritation, you may need to take a break from contacts. If your eyes don’t feel better quickly, we recommend you see us for an exam and proper treatment. Daily disposable lenses and contact lens moisturizing eye drops can also improve your comfort.

Infections

Viral and bacterial infections can cause red eyes. Bacterial infections are associated with poor eye hygiene and contact with small children. Antibiotics will help with redness and discharge. Viral infections do not benefit from antibiotics, but we can help you deal with symptoms. If a family member has an eye infection, it is extremely important not to share face cloths and towels, which will cause you to also share the germs.

Dry Eyes

Many conditions can lead to dry eyes including contact lens wear, climate, poor indoor air quality and diseases. Ask your eye care professional for guidance on finding your dry eye triggers. You’ll soon have relief from the associated redness, scratchiness and burning.

Inflammation

The inflammation caused by a variety of diseases—including arthritis, thyroid disease, and irritable bowel disease—can be revealed in the eyes. Redness associated with inflammation is often accompanied by eye pain.
