Contact lenses are a comfortable and appealing way to correct vision. But when contact lens wearers are tempted to take shortcuts in their care routine or forget about hygiene concerns, there is room for trouble.

Discomfort and pain, as well as redness and blurry vision, can result from poor contact lens habits. These symptoms can be temporary or result in more serious infections or damage to the eye. To wear contacts safely, follow these recommendations:

Keep It Clean

  • Before touching your lenses, wash your hands with soap and water. Dry them well with a clean cloth.
  • Rub and rinse your contact lenses every time you remove them.
  • Only use fresh solution; do not “top off” old solution.
  • After you rub and rinse the lens case, dry it with a clean tissue and store it upside down with caps off.
  • Replace lens cases often, about every 3 months.

Avoid Temptations to Stray from Routine

  • Only use contact lens solutions to disinfect and store your lenses. Never use water.
  • Never use saliva to lubricate lenses.
  • Avoid wearing lenses in the shower, when using a hot tub, or while swimming.

Wear Lenses Properly

  • Replace lenses according to the recommended schedule.
  • Do not sleep in contact lenses unless they are extended wear lenses and the practice is approved by your eye doctor.
  • Take your glasses with you so that you can remove your contacts as needed.

If you develop any irritation, poor vision, or redness, remove your lenses immediately and call your eye doctor for guidance on how to proceed. Don’t take good eye health for granted; give your eyes the TLC they deserve.
